Project Debrief: Hobby Horse Farms

Hobby Horse Farms is a high-end stable and horse-training facility in Loveland, Colorado. Ken and Kathy Coulson are long-time amateur sportsman in sorting and penning events, as well as dressage competition. Beyond their own sports, the Coulsons breed and sell champion cow horses and dressage horses.

With the breeding program comes many moving parts, from veterinary considerations to care and training of the animals. The Coulsons also trade and sell some of the horses in their breeding stock, and that’s where the website comes in. Our Fort Collins web developer was contacted about a new approach for their web presence and knew we could help.

With major networking requirements to get the word out, and serve as a resource for people in the industry working with the Coulsons. Specifically, Kathy wanted to be able to log in and make regular changes to the website, both the competition end of things, with a great, interactive gallery, but also being able to list horses for sale, or horses available for stud services.

Old Hobby Horse WebsiteTheir old website had served them well, but they wanted a more modern-looking site that was easier to log in and change. Kathy also asked if the new website could work on her tablet, as the old site worked, but only marginally well on smaller screens.

Colorado Web Design came up with a design that could highlight the nature of their horse stables, and we decided a video landing area would be a good way to immediately set Hobby Horse Farms apart from their competitors. And we were in luck. One of the Coulson’s favorite horses had given birth the previous spring, and we had a playful young horse with a terrific curiosity following the camera around. We used our DJI Ronin gyro-stabilizer so we could have decent movement without amateur camera-jerk. The final result was a cute home page video to welcome visitors.

Ultimately, the point of the site is to provide an official account of the farm activities, and availability of horses and competitive sports riders for training and competitions. The site is a testament to the beauty of these fine animals, and the work and care that goes into owning horses. The Coulson’s like being able to log in and update horse listings, photo galleries, and even page content easily.

The creative elements of website design, application design, and marketing are enough to keep anyone busy and engaged, but wiping the slate clean over and over at the start of new projects comes with its own challenges. "I like to start with really good client communication sessions. The rest is easy if you get started in the right way." He plays tennis, bikes, and hikes and then undoes all of that with too much delicious food and TV watching.
